Although I’ve been using PHP for over 10 years now and also regularly visit the official php.net website, it was only today that I became aware of the supported versions page via the official php.net Twitter stream.
Many of the large Swiss hosting providers are still using PHP 5.4 which was released 2 years and 8 months ago in March 2012. It had active support until 1 month ago and will receive security support for the next 10 months until September 2015. The official end of life date for PHP 5.4 is not yet visible on the unsupported branches page, but it has been announced on Twitter for 2015.
At Openstream we still have numerous legacy stores on osCommerce 2.2 (with security patches) which were recommended to migrate to either Magento or WooCommerce, but not all store owners want to make that investment either because of financial reasons or because they have integrations with 3rd party systems that are working flawlessly. And to some degree I can understand that they never want to change a running system, as the saying goes.
The drawback of that approach is that at one point your system might break unexpectedly and then you don’t have the time to plan migrating to a new system, but are under enormous pressure to fix everything within days or even hours which in the end might turn out even more expensive and will leave many of your customers frustrated.
